Snubbed by editors for the cover story of this week’s Washington Post Magazine, the article on Gallaudet’s football team is a worthy read in itself, but is a must-read for us neighbors of the school. Also, it is a good primer (read, “eye-opener”) into the sensitivities and cultural issues within the deaf community for those of us who have not been exposed to such or did not closely follow the coverage of the 2006 protests.

When Gallaudet University hired a hearing football coach who knew no sign language, it was a clash of cultures. Two years later, the once-moribund program is making plenty of noise.
